On Saturday, 9th October 2025, the Private School community gathered in GRA, Port Harcourt to mark a significant milestone, 20 years of Private School Educational Excellence under the banner of NAPPS (National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools). Teachers, school proprietors, EdTech leaders, and parents came together to celebrate achievement, reflect on progress, and envision the next phase of preparing students for global readiness.
Private Schools in Rivers State: A Strong Foundation for Global Readiness
Research shows that private secondary school students in Rivers State tend to outperform their public school peers in multiple academic performance indices. A study comparing SS3 private and public secondary students in several Local Government Areas found that private school students show a higher mean in academic performance and are more positively influenced by supportive factors like resources, consistent teacher-student interactions, and examination preparedness.
Moreover, recent WAEC rankings affirm that a number of Rivers State private schools regularly record high pass rates, especially in core subjects like English and Mathematics. For example, in WAEC 2024, Graceland International School achieved a near-total pass rate in credit-level passes (5 credits and above including English & Math).
These data points show that many private school students in Rivers are not just passing exams they are increasingly ready for globally-competitive standards.
